Celebrating 100 years of the 'Yoga Institute Of Mumbai'

In today's world, fitness is of utmost importance not just for physical wellbeing, but for mental peace as well. So when an invitation to be a part of Celebrating 100 years of the 'Yoga Institute Of Mumbai' came my way,  I just could not refuse this opportunity to gain better insight into the art of harmonizing the body and mind.

The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, one of the oldest organised Yoga Centre in the world –celebrated the 88th birthday of living Yogi Dr. Jayadeva Yogendraji along with a curtain raiser of the Centenary Logo of the Institute.

Smt. Hansa Jayadeva, Director, The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, said, “The Centenary Logo of The Yoga Institute has been exclusively designed to celebrate the mission as well as the vision of the oldest organized yoga institute in the world. Three generations of Yogis are relentlessly working to spread the knowledge of Yoga since 100 years. The Institute continues sharing practical applications of yogic ideals and making Yoga a way of life for millions across the globe.” She added, “Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra gives simple instructions and yet the message leaves a lasting impression on receivers. His message is to go within and be one with the self to know the self and understand it. Be a good student and the teacher will definitely come in your life. If the right does not stand up, the wrong cannot be controlled. A good Yoga teacher is a good role model for society.”

Shri Suresh Prabhu, who is looked upon for his simple lifestyle and attitude of Karma Yogi said, “Yoga goes beyond asana. There is a lot more that goes into practising Yoga. Yoga is one of the ways of knowing self. Another way of realising goals is via music as it renders harmony between mind, body and soul. I express my gratitude for being invited to be present on this gracious occasion and feel blessed to receive blessings of Dr. Jayadeva and Hansaji.” The audience was enlightened about, a man of few words, Dr Jayadev and his style of teaching the knowledge of Yoga in the most subtle yet impactful manner. Some awareness about the Institute’s signature teaching of Bhavas was also shared.

Another highlight of the day was the commemoration of Shri Yogendra Chowk. The Yogendra Chowk has been raised to commemorate 100 years of The Yoga Institute and pay tribute to the Founder, Shri Yogendraji. Born in a family of Yogis in 1929, Dr.Jayadeva Yogendra (M.A., PhD.), is a simple man and a true Yogi. Revered as a Guru for his absolute dedication to a life of discipline and simplicity, he has been spiritually inclined since childhood. Today, as the President of The Yoga Institute, he continues to carry on the Founder’s legacy in his silent and sincere way. Fondly known as Dr. Saheb, he has pioneered work in Yoga Education and Therapeutics. Dr.Jayadeva’s most significant contribution to the yoga renaissance is the introduction of Bhavas as expounded in the Samkhya philosophy, in conjunction with the practice of classical yoga asanas. He was awarded the prestigious Hargobindas scholarship in 1955 for his remarkable work on MoksaParvan of the Mahabharata (His Doctoral Thesis). Students at the Institute continue to draw constant inspiration from his wisdom, compassion, wit and unflinching commitment to truth.

It was truly an enriching experience to be amongst such eminent personalities and be a part of this grand celebration.
